Overview
Geger Beach (Indonesian: Pantai Geger) is a sandy beach located on the southeastern coast of Bali, Indonesia. It lies within the Nusa Dua area, part of South Kuta, Badung Regency, and is situated on the Bukit Peninsula.
The beach is known for its calm sea conditions, light-colored sand, and well-maintained shoreline. Due to its gentle waves and convenient entry into the water, Geger Beach is often considered suitable for families and swimming, including for children.
Location and Setting
Geger Beach is located approximately 15 kilometers from Ngurah Rai International Airport and around 20 kilometers from Denpasar, the capital of Bali. It borders the luxury resort zone of ITDC Nusa Dua, one of the most developed and regulated tourism areas on the island.
The beach stretches for about 1 kilometer along the coast and is framed by landscaped hotel grounds, pedestrian paths, and a small coastal temple.
Beach Characteristics
Geger Beach features fine, light-colored sand and a gently sloping shoreline. The seabed near the shore is mostly sandy, with some rocky sections further out.
The sea is generally calm due to offshore reefs and coastal protection, which reduce wave activity. Strong currents are uncommon, and waves remain relatively small throughout most of the year. These conditions make the beach suitable for swimming and shallow-water activities.
In some areas, fishing boats can be seen anchored offshore, reflecting the traditional coastal use of the area.
Swimming and Sea Conditions
Swimming is one of the primary activities at Geger Beach. The gradual entry into the water, combined with shallow depth near the shore, allows for safe and comfortable bathing.
Seaweed may appear in deeper areas, typically beyond approximately 1.8 meters, but it rarely affects swimming close to the shore, especially during calm weather. A paved underwater pathway allows access toward the reef during low tide.
Because of these conditions, Geger Beach is sometimes informally referred to as a family-friendly or children’s beach.

The northern section of Geger Beach is more accessible to the general public and includes sun loungers, walking paths, and basic beach facilities.
A pedestrian promenade runs along the coastline and connects Geger Beach with other parts of Nusa Dua. The walking route extends for approximately 4 kilometers and is commonly used for coastal walks.
An entrance fee is charged for visitors who are not staying at beachfront resorts.
Cultural Features
At one end of the beach stands Pura Geger Dalem Pemutih, a traditional Balinese Hindu temple built on a coastal rock formation. The temple plays a role in local religious life and is associated with the historical naming of the beach.
The word “geger” in Indonesian can be translated as “commotion” or “disturbance,” a name linked to local legends surrounding the temple and coastal area.
History
Before large-scale tourism development in Nusa Dua, Geger Beach was used primarily by local communities for fishing and seaweed farming. Seaweed cultivation was once a common activity along the shoreline, particularly during the early 2000s.
As tourism expanded and resort development increased, traditional seaweed farms gradually disappeared from the area. Economic shifts and the growth of the hospitality sector led local residents to transition from marine farming to tourism-related employment.
Current Use
Today, Geger Beach functions as a recreational and residential coastal area. It remains quieter and less crowded than many of Bali’s more famous beaches, such as Kuta or Pandawa.
The beach is primarily used for:
swimming
sunbathing
walking along the coast
light water activities
Surfing is possible beyond the reef but is generally suited to experienced surfers due to stronger currents offshore.
